My written Danish is pretty bad, so I'll write in English and hope you understand.
helt fint... I read this little bit about the NAD 755 and it had me concerned. *** "Even more surprising at this level is the lack of audio support via HDMI. Despite being classified by NAD as v1.3, the HDMI inputs only pass through video; you'll need to connect an optical lead or make a multichannel analogue connection to your source to hear anything." **** Full review Does this mean that I can't connect an Xbox or a DVD player over HDMI and get the audio without also connecting a separate cable to the same device for picking up the audio? If "yes"...why? Isn't that missing the whole point of HDMI? And is this normal for other receivers? I was also considering a Sony STR-DG-820 but would probably avoid it if this were also the case. How is your own receiver handling this? I would also welcome recommendations if you know of a model that simplifies things by sending audio and video over the same cable. I have a budget of 6.000 Kr. |

Yes... I might have to get used to the look of the Onkyo series. Aesthetics
are a bit of a concern for me as well unfortunately. I can't believe the NAD which is up around 6.000 Danish couldn't manage this. Pretty disappointing. I will check out the Onkyo's again. Any other suggestions? |

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder :-), Although I am really in
favor of silver as a general rule, the black is - you're right - in this case better. It hides the black stripe which otherwise makes the silver model look a bit dated. In other news, the STR-DG-820 does pass audio. But one thing I did notice is that it is extremely slow to switch between sources. Maybe it was the TV, but it seemed to take 5 or 10 seconds to detect the audio and video and begin passing the signal from the Apple TV to which it was connected. Is THIS normal? Sorry, but I am a HiFI noob. I would have expected that when I changed the source on the receiver from say, DVD to VIDEO 1, that it would be almost instant. We are living in 2008, right? |

Yah ok. Point taken! Untill a year ago all my equipment was in silver. But now I really love the new look i black, stored in a whitewash furniture. It isn't an issue for me to wait 10 sek for the Onkyo to shift between sources. Well I'we got used to 60 sek for the BD to load a film. I think thats very normal because the reciever needs to detect the incoming signal and do several switching between the inside components. Switching between analog signals is far easyer. Yes the year is 2008! But AV equipment is getting far more complicated than we ever thought of. |

Præcis hvad menes her? (i mit tilfælde STR-DG720) |

@ Kampus "It isn't an issue for me to wait 10 sek for the Onkyo to shift between sources."
Do you mean it doesn't take 10 seconds for the Onkyo, or that you don't mind that it does? :-) I think it's absurd, frankly. These are small computers, they should be able to handle it. It's probably the HDMI spec which is to blame, maybe doing all kinds of hand-shakes and making sure the source and destination are authorized. (SUK) The thing that really troubled me about the 820 though was that it seemed like if you were watching a source, say your Apple TV, and then you turned off the unit - when you turned the unit on again it didn't seem to feed out a signal to the TV again until you select another source and then go back. To sort of wake it up. What a drag! I guess my expectations are pretty high. And I agree things are getting more complicated but....but 10+ seconds??? The only good news is that the 820 did take sound and video together from the single HDMI connection. That was nice. But the overall build quality of this receiver is a definite minus. It is also almost half the price of the NAD or the Onkyo 606,...so I guess they saved money making it in plastic. And I could live with that as well if it were maybe a little better to switch sources. @furious jt - I am going to check it out. Don't know much about Denon frankly but the more I learn the more impressed I am. @pendec, ...the original post was about the lack of ability in some receivers to pass audio with the video over HDMI. I would like to have 3 HDMI sources (Apple TV, Xbox, and an HV20) connected and be able to switch between them and to hear them without also attaching an optical line or analog cables. Since then things have devolved into my complaining about waiting for source switching (10 seconds!?), and also taking recommendations on other alternatives. |
